Should faking your social media influence get you suspended from your job
Should faking your social media influence get you suspended from your jobShould faking your social media influence get you suspended from your jobIn some industries, your social media followers are an important metric for prospective and current employers to measure your influence in the workplace. But a new investigation from the New York Times alleges that popularity can be bought, and many celebrities, including actor John Leguizamo, former NFL player Ray Lewis, singer Clay Aiken, and even a Twitter board member are buying Twitter followers from a company called Devumi. The Times reports that Devumi, which promises 100 Percent Active, English Followers, has sold 200 million Twitter followers to at least 39,000 customers. In the case of at least 55,000 of the sold followers, the accounts were bots that stole real peoples identities. Can you get in trouble if you fake your influence?Buying fake followers can falsely increase the perception of an employees popularity and power. That is a misleading action, but is it an illegal one? Twitter, which does bedrngnis require real people to be behind each account, said it strictly prohibits users from buying followers. Buying influence may not just violate a social media companys policy, but when the influence comes from faked accounts of real people, it may be in violation of state and federal impersonation and commercial deception laws.Following the Times investigation, Senators Jerry Moran and Richard Blumenthal asked the Federal Trade Commission to start an investigation into the deceptive and unfair marketing practices of Devumi and its rival companies.Employees facing fallout for faking social media numbersEmployees are compelled to fake social media numbers because they may work in industries where every like or follow matters. But it can be a risky game. When your next raise or endorsement is dependent on the influence you can convince your employer you have, faking it may cost you professionally. U.S. political site The Hill issued a staff-wide memo banning the purchase of Twitter followers after one of its columnists Joe Concha, who was listed in the Times report, admittedhe had bought 5,000 followers. The Chicago Sun-Timeswent one step further and suspended its film critic Richard Roeper while it investigating him for appearing in the Times list of Duvemi clients.Roeper, whohas also worked on Chicago television stations, may have felt pressured to rapidly increase his follower count by his employers. Theres a lot of emphasis at these TV stations on getting a lot of social media followers. That is one measure that use to evaluate the success and effectiveness of their on-air employee,Chicago media critic Robert Feder told The Washington Post. But if the Sun-Times wants to fully investigate the legitimacy of its employees Twitter following, it may first want to start with its own. In response to the Sun-Times announcement of its decision to suspend Roeper, one user shared an audit reportwith the newspaper of how many of its own Twitter accounts followers were fake

The Benefits of Adopting the COSO 2013 Framework Management Resources
The Benefits of Adopting the COSO 2013 Framework Management ResourcesThe Benefits of Adopting the COSO 2013 Framework Management ResourcesShould we transition to the COSO 2013 framework? Even for companies leid mandated to adopt it, this has become an increasingly common question throughout the business world since May 2013, when the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) released the much-discussed update to its internal controls framework.*COSOs original version, released in 1992, was accepted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a framework for verifying internal control over financial reporting (ICFR). However, the updated framework takes into account major global shifts that have occurred in the past two decades, including the explosion of the Internet and the passage of theSarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.Should your company adopt the COSO 2013 framework? Although small private businesses are not typically required to adopt, embraci ng the updated framework can create valuable benefits for companies of all sizes. Consider these four benefits your business could experience by making the transition.Benefit 1 Improved internal controlsOver the past 20 years, countless organizations have failed because of ineffective risk management and related internal controls. According to the COSO board, the updated framework offers companies mora effective internal controls, which will allow organizations to better mitigate risks and have the data necessary to support sound decision-making. As an executive, you could tap into the 2013 framework to evaluate how to improve the effectiveness of your internal controls as well as your companys overall efficiency.Benefit 2 Enhanced cybersecurityIn todays digital age, companies face an onslaught of fraudulent activity, cybersecurity threatsand otherrisks. There is growing concern at all levels of industry about the challenges posed by cybercrime, said Bob Hirth, COSO chairman and senio r managing director forProtiviti. This new framework helps put organizations on the right path toward confronting and managing the frightening number of cyberattacks.Benefit 3 Major cost savingsIn abenchmarking studyfrom Robert Half andFinancial Executives Research Foundation, the research affiliate ofFinancial Executives International (FEI), more than 95 percent of executives in the United States and Canada who were surveyed said they expect their organizationsregulatory compliance costs to riseor stay the same over time.According to COSO, if organizations implement the 2013 framework correctly, it will allow them to streamline processes, establish more effectiveinternal controlsand managecompliance costs.Benefit 4 More (positive) attention from investorsInvestors are scrutinizing the performance of public companies more than ever before. If your company adopts the 2013 COSO framework, youll have a more effective set of risk management controls in place, making your organization mo re attractive to potential investorsandbetter prepared for an IPO.A COSOreportnotes For a public company, stronger corporate governance should translate into stronger business results and increased shareowner value. When organizations transition to the 2013 framework, they can tout their commitment to integrity and ethical values and effective internal control to potential investors.*COSO, a joint initiative of five private sector organizations, develops frameworks and guidance on enterprise risk management, regulatory compliance, internal control and fraud deterrence. This blog post is for informational purposes only. I failed my training exams. Is there any hope for my future now
I failed my training exams. Is there any hope for my future nowI failed my training exams. Is there any hope for my future nowCongratulationsNo, seriously. This is going to be a game-changer in your career. So, you think I am mocking you? No. Dont get me wrong. I welches in the exact same position a few years back.As a fresher and an engineering graduate, the dream of all the students in our batch was to join one of the IT giants. I tried hard, attended off-campus interviews, cleared the aptitude, GD, HR round and finally got placed in Infosys. No coding /programming tests.First job with an IT giant, good pay for a fresher, six months training, and all this right here in my home town. I was on cloud nine. But wait Did I tell you something? - I hate programming. It hated me too. I suck at coding. Years of no passion for something cannot be changed by six months of training. Their training program was good, I dont deny it. But it was not working for me.So when I took up the two exams at the end of six months - I flunked big time.According to the policy, we should be terminated. About 20-25 of us were called to the HR cabin. We were all so ashamed to even make eye contact with each other. Myself and one of my batch mates who had become good friends during the six months training, were amongst them. The HR asked us to surrender our ID cards, gave some motivational speech like failure is stepping stone to success blah blah and asked us to leave. Thats it. It was all over in a day. Six months effort, all gone waste. I had missed a lot of interviews from other companies as I was attending Infosys training for six months. We were unemployed freshers, yet again. After bidding goodbye to our batch mates, most of them who had pitiful eyes, My friend and I took the local train to return home. She was crying a lot. I was sitting there, confused. As the train kept moving, We spoke about how happy our parents were when we bought them gifts with our first-month salary. How ha ppy we were that we no longer had to look for a job.Suddenly, my friend tells me I am a failure. I am going to jump out of this moving train.I was so shocked and scared. It took me a while to talk her out of it and we got down in our station.I came home and broke the news. My parents were little shaken as I had been a very good student with excellent grades throughout school and college. They were worried about how I was feeling more than anything else.My dad told me Take a break for a month. Then try to do something you like. There were many hardships I faced for the next one year becoming a recluse, nosy relatives wanting to know why I was chucked out, attending four to five interviews every day (non-programming). The next batch of grads were in the race by then.Today, I am in a profession that I love - a Soft Skill trainer and I love it. I would have never enjoyed working as a programmer even if I had cleared the Infosys test. My friend who wanted to jump off the train now works for an MNC as a graphic designer. She loves it too. Sometimes, We talk about that day (Dec 18, 2006) but end it on a positive note that both of us made a lot of good friends in those six months. In fact, she is now married to one of our batch mates she met during Infy training.Take this failure as a blessing. Go find your true passion. There is lot more out there than being an SE at Infosys. This column originally appeared on Quora.

The Benefit of a Workplace Fraternization Policy
The Benefit of a Workplace Fraternization PolicyThe Benefit of a Workplace Fraternization PolicyDo you think you need a fraternization policy for your workplace? Many employers avoid a fraternization policy (also referred to as a dating policy, workplace romance policy, or a non-fraternization policy) because they believe an employees private life should be kept private. Heres the problem with this notion. Employees need some direction about what is acceptable workplace behavior. Workers dont want to unknowingly cross a boundary line that results in injuring their work status and career. Savvy employees understand that some policies in their workplace are unwritten, but all employees are entitled to understand workplace norms. Beyond the employee, a fraternization policy is even more significant for the employer. Employees need to be informed as to what behavior is deemed inappropriate so they can be trained accordingly. This needs to take place in advance of you taking action to dea l with an adverse situation that affects your workplace. Private Versus Public Relationships You might think that employee friendships and romantic relationships only affect the private lives of those involved. If you believe this, you are wrong. A dating relationship, especially one that goes awry, can have a very damaging effect on other employees and disrupt workplace harmony. Workplace horror stories abound of dating couples screaming at each other, arguing in the middle of the break room, and throwing staplers at each other. Managers Who Date Employees Managers who are dating or romantically involved with a subordinate is never a good idea. Its not good for the company, the manager, the employee, or the employees coworkers. Its bad news all around. And this holds for employees who date managers in another department. The relationship, or frequently former relationship, limits how you as a manager can promote, or utilize the talents of, a subordinate. Either sparks of fa voritism will fly, or youll go the other direction and purposely not promote an employee who deserves it to avoid showing favoritism. Also, consider for a moment how it would look during a discrimination lawsuit if you fired an employee who you had an affair with. Theres also the matter of having to deal with a sexual harassment suit for an affair that began as a consensual relationship but spirals down to a question of non-consent. One California court even decided that a boss-reporting staff member relationship amounted to sexual harassment for the employees coworkers. Beyond the Law, Dating at Work Complicates Things Beyond the issue of two consenting single adults, there is also the issue of extramarital affairs in the workplace. These situations can have a severely negative impact on the affected family members, disapproving coworkers, and the discomfort that inevitably ensues at employee gatherings and events. These are the big-ticket issues, and they do not even take into consideration the day-to-day nonsense of stolen kisses, giggling in meetings, inappropriate touching, and time wasted instant messaging romantic emojis. Its merely common sense and good business to implement a specific, employee-friendly, fraternization policy that spells out the limits and parameters in todays workplace. A goodfraternization policy is key to workplace harmony and will honor the rights of both employees and employers.

Had a Long Period of Unemployment 4 Strategies to Get Back to Work
Had a Long Period of Unemployment 4 Strategies to Get Back to WorkHad a Long Period of Unemployment 4 Strategies to Get Back to WorkHow to Find a Job After a Long Period of UnemploymentOne sad reality of the job market today is that the long-term unemployed get a raw deal. The longer youve been out of work, the harder it is to find a job.By some estimates, those who have been unemployed for six months or longer must send out 3.5 times as many resumes as those who have been unemployed for less than six months. There are a number of reasons why people end up unemployed for lengthy periods of time, from being downsized to returning to school to taking time off to care for a loved one.Unfortunately, employers dont tend to view the situation with much nuance. They see a long gap in employment history, and they immediately assume the worst. This is not to say that the long-term unemployed can never bounce back. With some smart maneuvering, its possible to return to the workforce no matter ho w long youve been gone. Here are four tips to get you started on the way to a new job after six months or mora of unemployment1.Address the GapIts true that your employment gap is your worst enemy, but you cant hide it. Your new employer is more likely than not to find out about your fib, and they wont hesitate to boot you for it. No one likes a liar, especially not as an employee. You dont have to reserve a spot on your resume for the gap. Simply include accurate dates in your work history.Use your cover letter to get out ahead of the gap by explicitly mentioning it. Dont dwell on it your cover letter should mainly be used to make a case for why youre a good fit.Inserting 2-3 sentences to acknowledge the gap and briefly summarize how you spent your time during unemployment is enough. You can offer a more in-depth story about your time unemployed during phone screenings and in-person interviews. What should your in-depth gap story cover? Ideally, youll have spent your unemployment pro ductively. Emphasize volunteer work, voluntary training, schooling, and any other activities that kept your skills sharp or introduced you to new skills. If you took time off to raise children or care for a sick loved one, you can talk about the transferable skills you learned from these scenarios, like the logistics of coordinating care or the customer service skills you picked up while parenting. If you look back at your unemployed time and cant seem to find any productive periods, youll need to start playing catch up right away. Volunteer for organizations that are relevant to your desired role. Take some verbunden learning courses to brush up on your skills.Anything you can do to contribute to your professional acumen will make your period of unemployment that much less of a problem to prospective employers.2.Leverage Your NetworkIts estimated that as much as 85 percent of all jobs are filled through networking rather than blind applications. Networking is important for job seeker s at any stage of their career and in any situation, but its especially critical for those who have been away from the workforce for a while.Networking allows you to make personal contact with hiring influencers at target organizations. The personal aspect of these connections is why networking matters When decision-makers know you on a more personal level, theyll have an easier time overlooking your employment gap.Start by getting in touch with contacts already in your network. Invite them out to coffee or lunch your treat, of course to talk shop. You want to be upfront about your search for a job so that they can point you in the right direction. However, you need to remember that networking is a two-way street. You have to be prepared to offer some sort of value to your contact in return, if you havent already helped them out previously. You may not be able to provide such value at the time, but you definitely need to keep your contact in mind for when you have opportunities to return the favor down the road. You should also reach out to what Elissa Kuykendall of career support firm ArcVida calls near-peers. These are people at target employers who are at your desired level or a step above your desired level. These people can help you get your foot in the door at companies for which youd like to work.Start the relationship off by requesting informational interviews with near-peers. In these interviews, your goal is not to aggressively pitch yourself for a role instead, you want to learn more about the organization and its culture. Nurture these relationships as you would any other professional contact, and they may lead to referrals.3. Go IndependentOne way to get back into the game is to start freelancing in your desired field. As a freelancer, youll likely be able to avoid conversations about your work history. Prospective clients will be more interested in your accomplishments and your portfolio of previous work than in your resume.

Career Options as a Zoo Nutritionist
Career Options as a Zoo NutritionistCareer Options as a Zoo NutritionistZoo nutritionists are responsible for managing the dietary requirements of exotic animals kept in tierparks. Duties Zoo nutritionists oversee all aspects of nutritional management for a wide variety of animals kept in the tierpark environment. They are responsible for designing diets for hundreds of species, ensuring that each animal consumes a well-balanced ration with the proper caloric content. They also make adjustments to the rations of animals needing to gain or lose weight, those that are pregnant or lactating, animals that have been ill, or new animals that are transitioning into the zoos dietary program. This process involves keeping nutritional records, monitoring diet consumption, monitoring weight changes, and reviewing diets periodically to ensure that all needs are being met. As a part of their management role, zoo nutritionists must supervise zoo commissary keepers as they prepare, assemble, a nd distribute rations. They also must work closely with other staff members such as the zoo veterinarian, zoo veterinary technicians, and zookeepers to monitor animal health. Zoo nutritionists are tasked with ensuring that food safety procedures are in place, with special attention focused on proper food storage and handling. They also are responsible for ordering ration ingredients and evaluating purchased items to be sure they are fresh and of a high quality. Budgeting and cost analysis may also be one of their responsibilities tied to the ordering process. At some facilities, zoo nutritionists may be involved with conducting and publishing nutrition-related research. Career Options Zoo nutritionists can also find work in other animal nutrition roles including research and development for pet or livestock feed. They can also transition into zoo management roles. Education Training A graduate degree in nutrition, animal science, biology, or a closely related area is requir ed for employment as a zoo nutritionist. A Ph.D. degree is mandatory for most positions in this field. Zoo nutritionists must have excellent communication skills, leadership ability, and strong organizational skills. Record keeping is a critical modul of this position, so the candidate should be extremely detail oriented. Computer literacy is also very important, as most record keeping and nutritional analysis are managed digitally. Zoo internships, wildlife rehabilitation internships, and animal nutrition internships can help an aspiring zoo nutritionist to gain valuable practical experience working with exotic animals. Salary Compensation for professionals in this role can vary widely based on the nutritionists level of education, years of experience, and the funding available to the zoo where they work. While specific data on the niche of zoo nutritionists is not readily available due to the limited number of available positions in this field, most animal nutritionists earn a solid salary. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) cited an average annual wage for all food scientists of $58,610 ($28.18 per hour) in the most recent salary survey of 2012. The BLS research data also indicated that those specifically employed as animal dietitians and nutritionists earned an average salary of just over $50,000 per year in 2012. Indeed.com cited a similar average salary ($55,000 per year) for animal nutritionists in 2011. SimplyHired also cited an average salary of $61,000 per year for animal nutritionists in 2011. Career Outlook There are very few zoo nutritionists, so finding a position in this field can be quite challenging. Only large zoos in major metropolitan areas tend to be able to keep a full-time zoo nutritionist on staff, though the number of positions is slowly increasing each year. A few zoos (like the National Zoo in Washington D.C.) have multiple zoo nutritionists on staff. Candidates with a Ph.D. degree and significant experience with exotic animals will continue to enjoy the best job prospects in the field.

Here is how to recover from a bad job interview fumble
Here is how to recover from a bad job interview fumble Here is how to recover from a bad job interview fumble You didnât think it was possible, but you found it - your dream job. According to the description of the position, the role plays to all of your skills and gives you the chance to make a real difference in an industry that matters to you. It will open opportunities for you to learn new things to advance your career. And the salary and benefits donât look bad, either! Now, your only challenge is making the job yours. Nailing the interview is obviously a key part of landing any new role, but what happens when things donât go perfectly? Is there room to recover? After an interview fumble, is the dream job still within your reach? According to data from LinkedIn, 55% of working professionals admit to making a mistake that affected an interview or their career, so itâs clear that perfection is far from the norm.LinkedIn career expert Blair Decembrele tells us that it can be tricky to distinguish mistakes that are bound to be âinterview killersâ from slip-ups that can be m ore easily forgotten. After all, every interview and interviewer is different, so itâs hard to say once and for all which fumbles are actually recoverable. Still, relationships are everything when on the job search. âHaving a strong professional community built on real relationships will always be helpful when trying to turn things around,â asserts Decembrele. âBe sure to contact colleagues and friends working at the company when youâre interviewing.âBefore you even set foot in the office for the interview, do everything you can to establish positive vibes with people who already work for the organization. If you donât have personal friends who work there, do some homework to find out if there are friends of friends who do - or if there might be some other connection you can leverage in the application process. Even without those connections, you can ensure that the existing team has a positive view of you as a candidate with friendly, well-written emails and cover let ters that may help tip the scales back in your direction if you mess up come interview time.Beyond that, your best bet in recovering from an interview fumble is to simply apologize in the moment. If your interviewer corrects a statement youâve made about the company or if you forget their name (yikes!), itâs best to acknowledge the error ASAP. Per LinkedIn, just over half of working professionals think that apologizing privately and in person is the best way to recover from a fumble, and nearly as many feel that handling it right then is the way to go. If you canât come up with a good answer to a more challenging question during the interview, you may want to follow up that stumble with an email as well. âTake an opportunity to thank the interviewer for the excellent question, request some time to consider your answer, and come back with a response later in the day,â Decembrele suggests. âYou can send a more well-considered response with your thank-you note.âIf youâr e in the midst of an interview and feel like your nerves are going to get the best of you or make you lose your train of thought, the best way to get things back on track is simply to relax. Yes, we know this is easier said than done, but itâs a great approach if you want your interviewer to forget any weirdness from earlier in the conversation so they can simply be impressed by the brilliant responses that are still to come out of your mouth. Take a deep breath, look at your resume to help you refocus, and forge ahead. Itâs okay to jot down a few notes if it helps keep your mind from wandering as well. âYou can write down a one- or two-word prompt for each question as itâs asked, so you can refer back to it should you lose your train of thought,â says Decembrele. âOr, if youâve been distracted, acknowledge the distraction, ask the interviewer to repeat the question, and get yourself back on track.âAn interview mistake doesnât have to mean the end of your journey t o nab your dream job - itâs all in how you take charge in handling it.This article originally appeared on Brit + Co.

Ten Common Spelling Mistakes That Could Hurt Your Career
Ten Common Spelling Mistakes That Could Hurt Your Career Ten Common Spelling Mistakes That Could Hurt Your Career By making common spelling errors in your everyday writing, you may be inadvertently leaving employers and co-workers with a negative perception about your intelligence, your attention to detail, or your ability to do the job. However, a quick review of some common spelling errors can go far in redeeming you: There/Their/Theyâre The misuse of these three words is one of the most common mistakes in the English language. The word âthereâ describes a place or an idea. The word âtheirâ means thereâs possession or ownership of something. The contraction âtheyâreâ is just a combination of the words, âthey are.â Example: âIf theyâre planning on driving through the storm in their van tonight, it might be a good idea to set the extra windshield wiper fluid over there in the back seat.â Lose/Loose âLoseâ is the opposite of win, so sports teams may occasionally âloseâ a game. The word âlooseâ is used, for example, when a person drops a significant amount of weight and their pants seem larger than normal. A good tip to use for remembering the difference: Adding an additional âoâ makes the word physically bigger â" much like the pants that become physically bigger during weight loss. Definitely For some reason, many people want to add the letter âaâ to this word. Remember this phrase to stay on track: âThere is definitely no âaâ in definitely!â Effect/Affect In most cases, the word âeffectâ is used as a noun, which is a person, place, or thing. âAffectâ is a verb, which is an action word. If you are unsure on which way to spell this word, simply replace it with another verb to see if the sentence still makes sense, if it does, the word âaffectâ should be used. A Lot/Alot Many people make the mistake of combining two separate words, âaâ and âlot,â into one word, âalot.â Keep in mind that there is always a lot of space between an âaâ and its âlot.â Whoâs/Whose âWhoâsâ is simply an abbreviation for âwho is.â The word âwhoseâ is defined as a possessive adjective, meaning it is used to establish ownership. Example: âWhose telephone are we going to use for the conference call?â Weather /Whether âWeatherâ includes all things related to the outdoor elements like the sun, rain, and snow. The word âwhetherâ is a conjunction, and itâs used to combine one or more alternatives. Example: âWhether or not something is completed will determine the outcome of all of our projects.â Weird As confusing as it may be, the age-old phrase, âI-before-E, except after Câ does not apply with this word. Weird, right? Quite/Quiet âQuietâ describes when little noise or activity is occurring. âQuite,â on the other hand, is an adverb that describes something thatâs of a measurable extent. Example: âThe break room in back is quiet, but I also noticed it is quite clean today.â Misspell Thereâs likely no other word that is more embarrassing to get caught misspelling than the actual word, âmisspell.â The good news about learning these rules is that once you understand them, itâs likely that it will become second nature to use them correctly. However, as the old saying goes, âIf you donât use your skills, you lose your skills.â Or is it âlooseâ your skills?

Reasons to learn Ruby programming
Reasons to learn Ruby programming Reasons to learn Ruby programming Many developer and designer jobs today call for the Ruby programming language - or for Ruby on Rails, which is a collection of shortcuts written in Ruby for quick and easy website building. Here are five reasons why developers should learn Ruby programming: 1. Ruby can make you happy (really!) Weâll start right out with the best reason. Ruby is a dynamic, reflective, object-oriented, general-purpose programming language designed by Japanese developer Yukihiro Matsumoto (or Matz, for short). Matz says he designed Ruby for developer happiness. Many developers agree. 2. Ruby is in demand Many popular web applications like Twitter and Shopify were created with Ruby or Ruby on Rails, and the pairâs popularity is growing. Many companies also use the Ruby programming language for everyday work. Thanks to that popularity, Mashable lists Ruby ninth on its list of 15 programming languages developers need to know in 2015. 3. Ruby salaries are rising According to the Robert Half Technology Salary Guide, the starting salary midpoint for developers is 103,000. You can use our Salary Calculator to adjust an entry-level web developer salary midpoint for your city. 4. Ruby is poised for longevity Ruby programmers know the language is dynamic and here for the long haul. Matsumoto is still heavily involved with Ruby and has spoken about his vision for Rubyâs future as well as about mruby, the embedded, lightweight Ruby he created. 5. Ruby is quick and inexpensive to learn Plenty of online sites offer affordable Ruby programming and Ruby on Rails classes. Future programmers will also find plenty of online tutorials and a great Ruby community ready to help answer questions and inform users about updates and Ruby news. Youâll want to learn both Ruby and Ruby on Rails. Learning a web application framework (Ruby on Rails) before learning a programming language itself (Ruby) means you will be able to shorten your Ruby learning curve. Later, youâll see how the things youâve learned in Rails apply in Ruby. If youâre new to programming, learning Ruby programming and Ruby on Rails offers you a lucrative and easy way to get into the programming world. More experienced Ruby programmers will also find plenty of opportunity to put their skills to use. And both new and experienced developers will have fun doing it. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.

What Makes an Elevator Green
What Makes an Elevator Green What Makes an Elevator Green In the beginning there was Archimedes, who in 236 B.C.E. hooked his famous pulleys to the top of a big wooden box and began to pull. Eureka, the elevator was born. Made of locally sourced, sustainably produced materials, his person-powered off-the-grid invention is the distant ancestor of a new crop of eco-friendly elevators now courting the growing green-building market. Some estimates project that buildings consume about 40% of the worlds energy, and elevators account for between 2% and 10% of a buildings energy use. The leading elevator manufacturers are rising up to get those numbers down. What makes an elevator green? Energy consumption is key, but thats just a start. The materials, processes, and technologies that go into the manufacture of an elevator system also count. So too do the choices of interior paints, flooring, control panels, lighting, and HVAC systems. All of these elements can contribute points to a buildings overall score for LEED accreditation by the U.S. Green Building Council. Here is a snapshot of how the major elevator makers are addressing these design elements. Machine-Room-Less Technology Introduced in the mid-1990s, machine-room-less (MRL) technology was one of the biggest advances in elevator design since they went electric a century before. Miniaturization has made it feasible to house the MRL machinery right in the elevator shaft rather than in a costly rooftop machine room. Incorporating a gearless traction design, MRL elevators in some cases can use up to 80% less energy than hydraulic lifts, without the expense and environmental headaches of oil-filled underground hydraulic cylinders. Machine-roomless elevators are compact, lightweight, gearless machines with greater energy efficiency. Image source: EnergyDesignResources.com KONE, Inc. (Moline, IL) introduced the first MRL elevator and places so much stock in the technology that the company discontinued manufacturing hydraulic elevators altogether. Its EcoSpace MRL elevator design incorporates a low-friction, gearless hoisting apparatus that prevents wear and reduces energy consumption by half compared to a geared system. A machine-room-less elevator system by Otis (Farmington, CT), the Gen2 system, is scalable to save energy in a range of building heights. It too aspires to 50% energy reduction over earlier systems, with the added green bonus of lubrication-free operation thanks to polyurethane coated-steel belts, gearless machine, and roller guides. Regenerative Drives Green elevators dont just stop with reducing energy consumption some of them give back much of what they take. Regenerative drive systems recover energy that would normally be dissipated as heat and put it back into the buildings electrical system. Not only does the technology produce power for lighting and air conditioning, it also saves money by reducing the need for machine-room cooling. Regenerative drives reduce power consumption during peak periods, contributing to a buildings overall operational bottom line. Most of the major players offer this technology. Control Features Its a matter of physics: elevators without very many passengers aboard require more energy due to the weight differential between the elevator and its counterweight. A major goal of green elevator technology is to cut down on these light loads through precision traffic control, management of interior lighting and other energy-burning factors. Conventional elevator (left) and elevator with destination control (right). With a destination control system, floor calls are grouped. Image source: Schindler Novel computerized systems help reduce the number of light-load trips while ensuring that there are enough elevators in operation to provide fast service. Schindlers (Morristown, NJ) systems offer an Energy Control Option (ECO) mode that switches unused elevators into standby. If waiting times become too long, the system will activate additional cabs to meet the need. ThyssenKrupp (Memphis, TN) says its Destination Dispatch system improves handling capacity by 15-30%. The system monitors and controls the amount of current delivered to the motor, ensuring the correct level to provide to keep the motor running at full speed. As a result, the motor is protected from peak over-currents, potential overload and sudden power surges. Outside the box Green elevator technology isnt limited to whats in the shaft. Companies include external factors in their sustainability bona fides that contribute to a lower overall carbon footprint across the elevators life cycle while reflecting their green corporate values. Customers considering an elevator vendor can evaluate the energy-efficiency of its manufacturing facilities, service fleet management practices, remote monitoring technologies for early diagnosis of mechanical problems, and other support systems. Elevators will never again be as eco-neutral as it was back in Archimedes day, but its clear that green elevator technology is on the way up. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. Green elevators donât just stop with reducing energy consumption â" some of them give back much of what they take.

A Milestone Year for the ASME Federal Government Fellows Program
A Milestone Year for the ASME Federal Government Fellows Program A Milestone Year for the ASME Federal Government Fellows Program A Milestone Year for the ASME Federal Government Fellows Program Gloria Wiens, one of the three women engineers currently serving as ASME Federal Government Fellows, will complete her second term as the ASME Foundation Swanson Fellow at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office in September. Since 1973, ASME's Federal Government Fellowship Program has been providing Society members with the opportunity to interact with legislators and provide much-needed engineering and technical expertise advice during the U.S. policy-making process. For the first time in the program's history, three female ASME members Gloria Wiens, Briana Tomboulian and Maureen Fang are serving simultaneously as ASME Federal Government Fellows. The ASME Federal Government Fellowship Program enables ASME members to devote a year working in government, providing technical advice to policy makers and key federal agencies. Traditionally, ASME Federal Fellows have served in either the Executive or Legislative Branch. One of the three Fellows, Gloria Wiens, PhD, is currently in the middle of her second term as an ASME Foundation Swanson Fellow. The Swanson Fellowship was established in 2010 in recognition of ASME Honorary Member and Fellow Dr. John A. Swanson. All ASME Federal Fellows who serve their fellowship terms in the Executive Branch are designated as ASME Foundation Swanson Fellows. Dr. Wiens, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Florida, has spent her two terms as a Swanson Fellow serving as the assistant director for research partnerships at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office (NPO), which is hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md. In this capacity, she works with Advanced Manufacturing NPO and federal agency staff to plan, design and develop formal documents for announcements and solicitations for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) institutes, and to manage physical and electronic outreach efforts to non-federal stakeholders on advanced manufacturing issues. During her first term as a Swanson Fellow, Wiens served as executive secretary for the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership 2.0, a committee under the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Since August, she has been chair and executive secretary for the Advanced Manufacturing NPO Interagency Working Team, which plans and coordinates federal advanced manufacturing activities and develops policy documents for the NNMI. With her second term coming to a close this September, Wiens noted that while the ASME Federal Government Fellowship Programs ultimate goal is to improve U.S. policy as it relates to engineering and technology, the program also offers considerable benefits for the engineers who are selected. Briana Tomboulian is serving as an ASME Congressional Engineering Fellow in the office of Sen. Ed Markey. The ASME Fellows Program brings the engineering perspective into the government decision process and program development, she said. It provides the underlying technical foundation necessary for strengthening and providing technical creditability and content in government proposals, subsequent actions and approaches for addressing issues and program development. In addition, she said the program provides networking, greater perspective and opportunity to contribute in a way that enables one to have a greater impact on the nation as a whole, and greater awareness of opportunities that may not normally be realized. The program also heightens the visibility of women engineers as experts within the profession, she said. A second ASME Federal Fellow, Briana Tomboulian, Ph.D., also began her one-year term as an ASME Congressional Engineering Fellow in January. Dr. Tomboulian, who is serving in the office of Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), received her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst last June, and had previously served as a NASA Space Technology Research Fellow for three years, researching heat radiator designs for an in-space nuclear electric propulsion system. As an ASME Congressional Engineering Fellow for Sen. Markey, a noted supporter of the environment and clean energy, Tomboulian provides technical expertise on energy and environmental issues. Her responsibilities range from composing memos and remarks for the Senator, preparing him for congressional hearings and committee meetings, conducting research for his speeches, meeting with constituents and interest groups, and working on longer-term projects. The opportunity to serve in a Senators personal office affords Tomboulian a unique opportunity to learn about the legislative process from the inside. Inspired by her grandmother, who was a state legislator and environmental advocate in Michigan, Tomboulian began participating in congressional visit days organized by technical advocacy groups during graduate school. After several trips to Washington, D.C., where she discussed the need to support RD funding for NASA and other STEM programs with Massachusetts Congressional Delegates, she knew she had found her niche. I really loved the human side of policy negotiating and communicating the issues affecting my community, Tomboulian said. I felt like I could have a much broader impact with my skill set through policy work versus pure research. I wanted to complete my doctorate to strengthen my technical and research abilities, and then hone the policy side of things. Ive always wanted to make a difference, to serve society in some way. I was so thrilled when I was offered the ASME Congressional Engineering Fellowship. Maureen Fang, ASME's inaugural Advanced Manufacturing Fellow, began her fellowship in January. Tomboulian agreed that women engineers could benefit from the experience, noting that the Federal Fellows program opens the door to many alternative paths for women and other minorities in the engineering profession. It's nice to have another option as an engineer, she said. The program has opened my eyes to exciting non-traditional career paths that incorporate activities and responsibilities that draw on more of my personal strengths. This is an opportunity for me to be a mechanical engineer, but in a different capacity that is really inspiring. This year, ASME also introduced a new fellowship based outside of Washington, D.C. the Advanced Manufacturing Fellowship which was established at the Youngstown, Ohio, headquarters of the America Makes innovation center. Maureen Fang, the Society's inaugural Advanced Manufacturing Fellow, began her year-long term in January. America Makes, which launched three years ago as the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute and is managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, was established to help the United States expand its capacities in additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, by encouraging collaboration among leaders from business, academia, non-profit organizations and government agencies on areas such as design, materials, technology and workforce development. Fang, a former Pratt & Whitney mechanical engineer and current PhD candidate in mechanical engineering technology at Purdue University, works with Mike Hripko, the center's workforce and education outreach deputy director, to develop new programs for disseminating both emerging and production-level additive manufacturing information, tools and techniques to U.S. industry and to the community colleges and colleges of engineering who are preparing the next generation of engineers and technicians. Although ASME and America Makes are still working on the details, these programs may include continuing education courses for practicing engineers and managers through the Society's Training & Development department, and 3D printing curriculum integration reports, guidelines and webinars that would be developed for colleges and universities by ASME's Engineering Education program. Ultimately, the ASME Advanced Manufacturing Fellowship aims to create value for America Makes and ASME by leveragi ng the strengths and capabilities of both organizations. Although working full-time during her fellowship at America Makes, Fang continues to work on her PhD research and dissertation at night and on the weekends and is on track to receive her doctorate sometime this year. Fang, who held positions in manufacturing, design, quality, and structures engineering departments while employed at Pratt Whitney, says the fellowship has been a wonderful opportunity. The timing was perfect because I finished most of my responsibilities at Purdue and now have the opportunity to perform my research off campus while doing this fellowship. The Advanced Manufacturing Fellowship has offered me so much in terms of learning a new type of technology and working for a private-public partnership type of organization, which is different for me. I come from industry, so being able to work with a non-profit organization like ASME and a public-private partnership like America Makes is very exciting. Im grateful to be here. The ASME Federal Government Fellowship Program is made possible through the financial support of the ASME Foundation. Career Advice for My Younger Self
Career Advice for My Younger Self Career Advice for My Younger Self Two interesting things have happened to me in the past week. First, I was asked the question, What advice would you give your younger self? Second, I attended my high school reunion. Needless to say, both moments made me think about the past and the advice I would give a young person today. First and foremost, Id tell myself â" and any other young person listening â" to focus on your strengths. As you grow up, people will strongly emphasize the importance of being well rounded and equally good at everything. As a result, we spend so much time trying to better the skills we struggle with. However, its the things were good at that make us special. You will go much farther if you pour your time into an area where you excel instead of stumbling around in an area at which youre not so great. Worry less about your weaknesses; celebrate your gifts instead. Second, Id say you should listen to your gut. People with good intentions will try to guide you along the way. They may be parents, teachers, or friends. Some of their advice may be helpful, but some may not be. Its your job to sort the good from the bad. Do a gut check with yourself before you make big decisions. Remember: Most people are best at giving advice for one specific area. Seek out mentors to help with specific decisions rather than all areas of your life. If you begin to head down a path that doesnt feel right, take a step back and reassess. Similarly, if youre on a path that you are sure about and are receiving negative feedback from those who may not be in a place to advise you, take your time before switching paths. When I made the decision to move from Oklahoma to upstate New York to study engineering, I received some negative feedback, but Im glad I stayed focused on my mission. It was the best choice I could have made. Lastly, know that your path may not be straight â" and thats okay. Today, its common for professionals to change their career paths many times over the course of their lives. Theres a good chance you will change roles, industries, or fields more than once. Each change will take you closer and closer to your ultimate destination. Be prepared for these changes. Theyre not failures. Dont dwell too long if something isnt working. Adjust your path and continue to move forward in a new direction. Thats where you will find your success. One of the most important elements of finding your way is staying informed and prepared for change. Its not always possible to predict what will happen next, but change itself is inventible. Being nimble, aware of your strengths, and willing to listen to your intuition will take you far. This is the advice Id give to the younger me, and in todays ever-changing job market, its the advice Id give the young people of today, too. How to Avoid Office Drama at Work - The Muse
How to Avoid Office Drama at Work - The Muse How to Avoid Office Drama at Work Trash-talking friends, free-flowing gossip, popularity contests, and exclusive cliques. Sound like high school? Probably. But the better (and much scarier) question is- does it sound like your office? You might assume now that youâve entered the professional, mature workforce, youâd be able to escape the petty drama reminiscent of high school. In reality, offices can be just as drama-filled as your high school homeroom. All of a sudden, you find yourself the subject of co-workers who talk behind your back, try to recruit you to take sides in an argument, or help make someone look good- but only at the expense of someone else. And if youâre not careful, itâs easy to get roped into those destructive activities yourself. But, as Iâm sure you remember from your school days, drama rarely benefits anyone. Itâs certainly not going to help you get ahead at work, land any promotions, or negotiate any raises. Stay on track to a successful career by following these six rules for keeping your work life drama-free. Rule #1: If You Did it When You Were 15, Donât Do it Now Weâre all mature, professional adults here, right? Yet, itâs easy to catch yourself doing things that are more worthy of high school hallways than the office. For example, maybe youâre not getting along with a certain co-worker, so you give her the cold shoulder- walking past her desk and passing her in the break room without a glance her way, let alone a greeting. You can immediately recognize this behavior as immature and inappropriate in a work setting- and it will only serve to incite more drama once the co-worker in question (and everyone else on your team) takes notice. Leave the angsty behavior behind and focus on interacting with your co-workers and dealing with any issues in a mature, professional way. Rule #2: Save the Venting for Outside the Office Itâs probably the most obvious rule of them all: Resist the urge to talk about your co-workers and boss while youâre in the office. And yet, most people do it anyway. Itâs common office chatter: âDid you hear what Brian said in the meeting this morning?â âI canât believe Lisa thought this report was good.â âI heard that Megan partied a little too hard with a client last weekend at the conference.â Yet, that seemingly harmless chatter immediately turns offensive when the person in question happens to walk by your cubicle while youâre mid-sentence- or when word inevitably gets around that youâre talking about that colleague. And donât think that closing your office door keeps you out of the fray. That sense of security can lead to raised, frustrated voices- which can often carry through office walls. Youâve heard it before, but everyone could use a reminder: Save the venting for when youâre away from the office and well out of earshot of anyone who works at your company. Youâll spare everyone the drama. Rule #3: When in Doubt, Wait to Reply There arenât many things that can get your blood boiling as quickly as an email that seems to attack you, your team, or your work. So when you do, you immediately fire off a scorching reply, contesting every point made in the email- and CCing a few key higher-ups to make your point crystal clear. Suddenly, everyoneâs chiming in and taking sides on whatâs now an emergency situation. Or, you resort to the more passive-aggressive approach, beginning your email with, âI could be wrong, but maybe my team wouldnât have missed our deadline if the product managers had provided the research on time.â Either way, youâre encouraging drama. So if you find yourself beginning an email reply in a frustrated frenzy, stop and walk away from the keyboard. Let the email simmer for a while before you respond. Logically think through what you want to say- and more importantly, how to say it in a calm, diplomatic way. Often, if you come back to the email 15 or 30 minutes later, youâll find that you can think much more clearly- and avoid a whole lot of drama in the process. Rule #4: Know When Itâs Time to Talk it Out Along the same lines, to avoid unnecessary drama, you have to realize the point at which itâs better to simply talk to your co-worker in person or on the phone, rather than engage in a heated email battle. It doesnât look good on anyone to foster an angry email chain, adding bosses and managers along the way, until itâs developed into a full-fledged battle. If you sense frustration, anger, or accusation in an email, and it likely canât be resolved with one simple email reply, resolve to talk it out. Youâll find that verbal communication leaves less room for misinterpretation and is often a better vehicle for resolving problems while leaving feelings intact. Rule #5: Have (and Use) a Go-to Escape Phrase Even if no action of your own fuels drama, you can get caught it in anyway: A co-worker comes to you to complain about a teammate, you receive an email asking your opinion about a sensitive workplace debate that doesnât concern you, or someone starts revealing all-too-personal details of your managerâs love life. To avoid getting roped in, come to the office prepared with a go-to escape phrase- a polite but firm way to see yourself from a conversation that isnât going anywhere productive. Career coach Lea McLeod suggests expressing helplessness: âWhen a co-worker starts spinning the gossip yarn (âI heard the boss knows that Samâs looking for a new job- what do you think heâs going to do?â), shrug and say âI canât help you with that one. Sorry.ââ Other escape phrases could include âIâm sorry, Iâm on a tight deadline and I need to get back to work,â or âIâm not feeling very chatty right now.â Whatever you feel most comfortable with, have it at the ready- and use it. Rule #6: Never Assume Negative Intent If youâre looking for drama, youâre going to find it. What do I mean? Letâs say someone on your team sends you an email that says âHey Katie, I think we may need to change the approach to our marketing campaign.â If youâre reading it under the assumption that everyone on your team is working together toward one, unified goal, you could see this as a respectful, helpful suggestion. If, on the other hand, youâre assuming everyone wants to knock you down on their way to the top, you could interpret it as a condescending attack on all the work your team has put into the campaign so far- and an assertion that the sender clearly thinks he or she is better than you. Itâs pretty apparent that of the two options, the second is much more likely to contribute to a drama-filled workplace. To avoid that drama, simply work under the assumption that your co-workers and managers are there to help you, support you, and challenge you to produce even better work. When you follow these rules, youâll avoid creating and adding to workplace drama. And a workplace without drama is one that is efficient, productive, and perhaps most importantly, enjoyable. How to calm your nerves before a job interview
How to calm your nerves before a job interview How to calm your nerves before a job interview Even when youâre totally prepared for an interview and know that you are qualified, it can still be a nerve-racking experience to walk into a room (of potentially more than one person) and be judged for your past performances. Job interviews come with very specific feedback- either youâll get the gig, or you wonât. No matter what your qualifications may be, how you conduct yourself in an interview can make a big difference when it comes to the impression you leave on your interviewer. The next time youâre up for a new job and have a big interview coming up, consider some of these tips to help settle your racing mind.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! How to calm your nerves before a job interviewPrepare for everythingâ¦even the worst. It goes without saying that one of the best ways to ace an interview is to prepare as much as possible beforehand. This includes everything from researching the company and the person who will be interviewing you to memorizing your best accolades and practicing in front of a mirror. What you might not have considered is the importance of also preparing for the worst.According to The Muse, itâs helpful to consider your biggest fear, and then try to come up with an answer for it. Proactive thinking- like coming prepared with floss for that errant piece of spinach you notice in your teeth right before you walk into the building- will help you rest assured that no matter what happens during the interview, you can handle it with aplomb.Take the guesswork out.We often spend a lot of unnecessary time and energy on the small details involved in a job interview- like what we should wear, and the best route to get there. Instead, a Forbes piece suggests eliminating the unknown by taking some solid steps to move past them. For example, if you are worried about traffic the day of your interview, try taking multiple routes to your destination in the days before the meeting to see which one works best. Not sure what to wear? Just call up the human resources department and ask.Donât be afraid to address the elephant in the room.No one expects you to show up to a job interview completely unnerved- youâre not a robot, after all. Instead, a Fast Companypiece recommends addressing your job interview nerves (jokingly is best) and using them as another way to bond with your interviewer.Use LinkedIn to your advantage.A few years back I had a big interview coming up at a website that would be mean switching gears and taking on a whole lot more responsibility. Needless to say, I was nervous. I found that the simple act of looking people up on LinkedIn- even just to connect a face to a name- made a big difference.Finding out more about where people worked before and what their hobbies are all provide more ways to connect, and you just might get lucky and discover that you have contacts in common, which means you can learn even more before the big day.Know your weaknesses. If youâre craving that big cup of coffee the morning of your interview but just know that itâll likely give you the jitters, do your best to skip it. If you know that taking some time to workout before the big meet-up will help you de-stress but you donât want to take time away from your research and studying, grab your computer or phone and prop it up on the treadmill while you walk.Whatever you can do to keep your routine as simple and normal as possible- including all the things you normally do before heading into a stressful situation- go ahead and do it. That includes skipping the exotic lunch before your 2 p.m. interview, too, unfortunately.Include something fun in your planning. For all the stress youâll put yourself through when it comes to interviewing, I love the suggestion from The Muse to plan something fun for afterwards. Not only will it give you something to look forward to, but it jus t might help you distress during the actual interview, knowing that not only have you done your best to prepare, but that youâll be rewarded afterwards with something youâll very much enjoy.Interviews are almost always stressful, so acknowledging that fact and finding a way to work with that stress will help you move past it. Top Supply Chain Resume Choices
Top Supply Chain Resume Choices The Basics of Supply Chain Resume Along with helping your resume get selected, it is also going to help hiring manager see how your abilities and experiences make you a perfect candidate for the particular job. An appealing job objective will offer decent beginning to your resume. Locating a job for a supply technician might not be difficult, but finding the particular position you want requires some additional effort. The pursuit of a new job can be rather daunting, but when you have a well-written resume that emphasizes your strongest attributes, you can receive the job that you desire. Planning ahead is a significant component of logistics. Writing your own resume can be an intimidating undertaking. You could like to produce headings like Skills', Strengths' or Interests' and collection info which will be about the work you are searching for. You could possibly love to create headings like Skills', Strengths' or Interests' and checklist in fo and facts which may be associated with the work you're obtaining.
